Allergies by the beach

I don’t know about you - but after spending months working @ the office, I am just itching to head out to the beach. As someone who grew up on a beach town, I know everything about safety by the water including Slip, Slop Slap, only swimming between the flags and watching your fluid intake. So I’m all covered- right? WRONG?

What other hidden dangers could be lurking around a simple trip to the beach?

Everyone with food allergies knows that you have to think about your meal arrangements prior to going on a day trip. If there doesn’t seem to be any viable options you have to bring your own food along. But did you know there are other issues when going to the beach that could be dangerous for people who have food allergies?

Here are some things you should be aware of before relaxing on the sand:

Storing an epi-pen safely

Safety 101 for anyone with anaphylactic allergies includes not leaving the house without an epi-pen but going out for long periods to places where the temperature can rise increases risks to the safety and durability of the Epipen. This is especially concerning at the beach because an Epipen cannot be exposed to direct sunlight. The recommended storage temperatures of 68 – 77 degrees Fahrenheit, with excursions of 59 – 86 degrees Fahrenheit being permitted. For day trips in the heat, we recommend a small insulated bag like this one where you can put some small ice-packs into it to ensure the temperature in the bag remains at a safe level:

Ice cream substitutes

There is nothing more delicious than a cold ice cream cone by the beach with the sun beating on your back. This poses a challenge as a significant amount of individually bought ice-cream contains at least one of the main allergies and kiosks by the ocean don’t usually stock such a large variety. In addition, since people generally don’t bring along a portable freezer with them to the beach it may seem like your child with allergies will just have to learn to deal with it.

Here are 2 tips that we hope will work for your family and help everyone enjoy their cold treat in the sand.

  1. Try choosing a beach in close proximity to a big supermarket. They will be more likely to stock an allergy-safe option and you can nip over to buy one when everyone else buys theirs.
  2. If you don’t live too far away from the beach you may want to consider bringing your own, wrapped in a plastic bag to avoid cross-contamination. Then you can ask the kiosk owner if they mind storing your allergy-safe ice-cream for you. After you explain why you bought your own- and tell them that you will buy ice-cream from them for everyone else- hopefully they will be accommodating. If they have issues with placing your bag in their freezer- offer to pay them a few dollars for their service.

Using safe sunscreen

When spending a day in the sun- putting on sunscreen religiously is very important- especially if you’re spending the time in the water which requires more frequent application. However, most people are unaware (until it’s too late) that many sun lotions are dangerous to people with food allergies- even though it’s not something you consume. For example; a lot of sunscreens contain nut oils, and while the list of ingredients don’t state, ‘contains peanut oil’ many lotions include ingredients such as arachidyl glucoside and arachidyl alcohol, both of which are peanut-derived.

Listed below are 3 sunscreens with detailed allergy information:

*Remember you can always request samples from the company so you can test one out in the safety of your own home with easy access to your medical procedures in cases of emergency.

Safe snacks

As always whenever you leave home for an outing with your family, you should bring your own safe snacks. Don’t rely on a kiosk or a smaller grocery store near the beach in an area you’re not familiar with to stock options that will be safe for your allergies.

Most importantly- remember to have fun- if your family loves the beach as much as mine does- spending some quality time by the water can really rejuvenate you.

What Our Clients Say

Meticulous in their preparations

During our recent visit to Israel, we really struggled to find food for our son who has anaphylactic level allergies to egg and sesame. We approached both restaurants and hotels and were told they were unable or unwilling to take responsibility for preparing his food.

After learning about Dr. Eliana on-line, we contacted her in the hopes that she could provide a ‘normal’ restaurant experience for our family.

Both she and Shani were meticulous in their preparations with the restaurants to ensure that our son had a wonderful and safe experience.

We truly appreciate their efforts to take care of our son, and to provide us with a lovely vacation experience.

Comfortable, calm, and at ease

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the amazing gift you have given us over this Pesach- the gift of having you with us!!!!

We have NEVER felt more comfortable, calm, and at ease than we did these past 10 days. Your warmth, professionalism, kindness, and care shown through in all that you did.

My children are so grateful that they were able to be with you this Pesach. You made sure that they were so well looked after and they felt so at ease and comfortable with you! You were so amazing and approachable to them! And they LOVED all the food you so amazingly prepared (supervised allergy-free food preparation, managed menus) for them!

It’s very difficult for us to trust people when it comes to our kids and allergies. You magically were able to take away ALL of our anxieties, and nervousness (and we don’t give that away so easily!!)

We can never fully thank you enough. We truly feel that you instantly became part of our family and we look forward to G-d willing being able to be with you and plan amazing trips with you many many many more times!!!!
