First dates & Food Allergies

Dating can be a worrying time for anyone, especially those who have food allergies. Whether you are the one with a food allergy or the one dating someone with a food allergy, it may be a difficult but necessary discussion to have.

When you finally decided to get over your fear and go on a date with your "crush," whom you have liked for so long, you suddenly think of a problem: how will I deal with my food allergies during the date?

We know all this is very scary but don't worry, we are here to give you advice and to help you feel normal.

Close touching and Intimacy

You remember what your mom always told you; kissing someone who has just eaten a food to which you are allergic can trigger a reaction. Why? Quite simply because the allergenic proteins in the food eaten remain in the saliva for a few hours. The partner who is not allergic may rinse their mouth, brush their teeth, or chewing gum after eating, but this will not be enough to eliminate the risk of a reaction.

Only one method seems effective to avoid contamination when the partner has consumed the prohibited food: wait several hours before approaching. Another solution is that your partner avoids eating the allergen a couple of hours before he meets you. And for people who don't want to take any risks, there is a radical solution; completely remove the food in question from your partner's diet.

First of all, you might not have to worry about this because most people don't get physical on the first few dates.

However, you will have to take advantage of these first dates, to talk about your food allergies. But take it easy we advise you to talk about your allergies lightly. For example, you can tell a funny anecdote that happened to you because of your allergies.

Have an open discussion about your allergies

Once your date will know about your allergies and knows about the severity of an allergic reaction, he would decide whether or not to continue dating. It is important to discuss how the allergies affect your relationship (maybe not on the first date). All physical intimacy, including hugging and kissing, needs to be met with caution because of your food allergies. This should be made clear to your date!

As you can see, it is not so hard to live with food allergies. You just have to be vigilant and talk about your allergies in a cool, relaxed, and light way. Make people around you feel that allergies are part of your life but are not difficult to live with.

Quick tips on dating and food allergies

  • Choose a restaurant together, and double-check it
  • Demonstrate the epinephrine auto-injector in person.
  • Make sure what he or she is eating is safe (especially if you want a first-date kiss!)
  • Be serious, but also instill humor when appropriate to calm your date's nerves!
  • BE HONEST, and there will be a second date!

What Our Clients Say

Meticulous in their preparations

During our recent visit to Israel, we really struggled to find food for our son who has anaphylactic level allergies to egg and sesame. We approached both restaurants and hotels and were told they were unable or unwilling to take responsibility for preparing his food.

After learning about Dr. Eliana on-line, we contacted her in the hopes that she could provide a ‘normal’ restaurant experience for our family.

Both she and Shani were meticulous in their preparations with the restaurants to ensure that our son had a wonderful and safe experience.

We truly appreciate their efforts to take care of our son, and to provide us with a lovely vacation experience.

Comfortable, calm, and at ease

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the amazing gift you have given us over this Pesach- the gift of having you with us!!!!

We have NEVER felt more comfortable, calm, and at ease than we did these past 10 days. Your warmth, professionalism, kindness, and care shown through in all that you did.

My children are so grateful that they were able to be with you this Pesach. You made sure that they were so well looked after and they felt so at ease and comfortable with you! You were so amazing and approachable to them! And they LOVED all the food you so amazingly prepared (supervised allergy-free food preparation, managed menus) for them!

It’s very difficult for us to trust people when it comes to our kids and allergies. You magically were able to take away ALL of our anxieties, and nervousness (and we don’t give that away so easily!!)

We can never fully thank you enough. We truly feel that you instantly became part of our family and we look forward to G-d willing being able to be with you and plan amazing trips with you many many many more times!!!!

Allergy Free baked goods for the lockdown

My family ordered a week's worth of food from Food Allergy Concierge during the most recent lockdown. Having the food on hand, and knowing that it was safe for everyone in the family to eat, helped turn the lockdown into a stay-cation! We were still able to take a break from cooking and worrying, and we look forward to using FAC's services again in the future.

Very easy to order and communicate your needs

We are so lucky we found this company to help us while our son was traveling. They provided allergy-safe baked goods and delivered them to his hotel so he could have bread and pastries on his month-long Israel trip. It was very easy ordering and communicating his needs. I would definitely use the food allergy concierge again the next time he travels to Israel.
