Ideas for Allergy Safe Meals

COVID-19 has been one of the fastest spreading viruses to ever be. In just a matter of weeks, the virus has spread throughout the globe, infecting thousands and disrupting the lives of nearly everyone. For many, this means closed offices, shut schools and a lot more family time than they expected. It is times like these when meal time becomes an activity. We are sharing some of our favorite, allergy safe meals and snacks, to make this trying time a little bit easier.

Breakfast

Hash browns – These are a delicious, fan favorite, allergy free option. They are fairly simple to make - not requiring too many ingredients – and can be paired with almost anything.

Toast – With an abundance of gluten free options, and countless spreads to choose from, toast is always a good option for allergy free homes. Allergic to peanuts? Try butter. Allergic to dairy? Try jam. Toast is one of the most versatile foods and can help keep any meal time interesting.

Fruit – Not everybody’s looking to carb load early in the morning, in fact many prefer a light and easy meal to start the day. Fruit is a great option for those looking for a simple, satisfying and allergy free meal.

Oatmeal – Similar to toast, oatmeal is extremely versatile. It can be paired with yogurt, berries or fruit. Made with water, milk or soy milk. It can even be kept simple with nothing more than some cinnamon and sugar. One of the hardest parts of allergy free meals is keeping it interesting, but when the same food can be made multiple different ways, the challenge becomes a little simpler.

Lunch & Dinner

Salad – Salad is a delicious, nutritious and healthy option for a light lunch. It can be paired with any number of proteins to suit your diet (cheese, egg, meat, chicken, fish) and can be made to taste any number of different ways. So, whether you prefer salty or sweet, there is a salad out there for you.

Soup – We might not be in the dead of winter anymore, but it is still a little bit chilly. And while the children being home may be a little difficult, it does make for more interesting meal time options. There are a number of delicious, kid and allergy friendly soups just waiting to be made. Some examples might be; orange soup, vegetable soup or even potato soup.

Zucchini Noodles – As the world becomes more allergy friendly, people are constantly trying to find new options and replacements to classic favorites. When it came to pasta, one of the most popular replacements was Zucchini noodles. These noodles can be served with sauces (tomato, pesto, etc.), meat, or even in a soup.

Meat or Chicken – Simple, delicious, nutritious and filling. Meat and chicken are both great sources of protein for children (and adults) and has tons of different options for cooking and serving that it almost never gets boring. Try a roast beef sandwich (gluten free bread), baked chicken, or a juicy grilled steak.

Pro Tip – Pair it with steamed vegetables or baked potatoes to keep an allergy safe, well rounded meal.

Snacks

Popcorn – Popcorn has long been a fan favorite when it comes to allergy safe snacks. It’s simple, delicious and versatile. And just in case you weren’t convinced yet, it’s also pretty low in calories.

Sun Butter and Celery Sticks – For anyone allergic to nuts and peanuts, finding a butter to snack on hasn’t been easy. However, sun butter is made with sunflower seeds and pairs great with some freshly cut celery sticks.

Beef Jerky – Dried meat may not sound appetizing, but it is actually better than most people think. More than that, it’s a great way to eat a delicious snack completely worry free. While it’s important to check the labels for any added ingredients, most jerkies are just straight up, allergy free, delicious meat.

Juice Box – A juice box may not technically be a snack, but sometimes all a child need’s is some juice to hold them over. The boxes made from 100% juice are a quick and easy way to satisfy your child without having to worry about dangerous allergens lurking.

Dried Fruit – Easy to store and easy to trust, dried fruit are a great snack time option for allergy free children. Make sure you double check labels and confirm that the dried fruit doesn’t contain any additives and you’re good to go.

Applesauce – Similar to the other fruit based snacks, checking the ingredients is vital, but these should all be good options. Other, similar options could be peach slices, raspberry apple sauce or fruit cups.

Conclusion

Meal time is always difficult with a food allergy in the family, but it is made even more difficult during times when the children are home. Having unique ideas for your children to enjoy can lead to an easier time at home. However, always make sure to check labels and make sure your child’s food is safe.

What Our Clients Say

Meticulous in their preparations

During our recent visit to Israel, we really struggled to find food for our son who has anaphylactic level allergies to egg and sesame. We approached both restaurants and hotels and were told they were unable or unwilling to take responsibility for preparing his food.

After learning about Dr. Eliana on-line, we contacted her in the hopes that she could provide a ‘normal’ restaurant experience for our family.

Both she and Shani were meticulous in their preparations with the restaurants to ensure that our son had a wonderful and safe experience.

We truly appreciate their efforts to take care of our son, and to provide us with a lovely vacation experience.

Comfortable, calm, and at ease

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the amazing gift you have given us over this Pesach- the gift of having you with us!!!!

We have NEVER felt more comfortable, calm, and at ease than we did these past 10 days. Your warmth, professionalism, kindness, and care shown through in all that you did.

My children are so grateful that they were able to be with you this Pesach. You made sure that they were so well looked after and they felt so at ease and comfortable with you! You were so amazing and approachable to them! And they LOVED all the food you so amazingly prepared (supervised allergy-free food preparation, managed menus) for them!

It’s very difficult for us to trust people when it comes to our kids and allergies. You magically were able to take away ALL of our anxieties, and nervousness (and we don’t give that away so easily!!)

We can never fully thank you enough. We truly feel that you instantly became part of our family and we look forward to G-d willing being able to be with you and plan amazing trips with you many many many more times!!!!
