Misconceptions About Food Allergies

There are common misconceptions about food allergies. The following is a list of certain misconceptions and what the true facts are about food allergies:

1. A food allergy just means a mild reaction like stomach aches or mild hives, to a certain food. However food allergies can be a lot more dangerous than that. Hives can be the first symptom of anaphalactic shock, leading to the throat closing, loss of consciousness, and even death. Food allergies are not only potentially life-threatening, they’re life-altering. People with food allergies must always be vigilant to ensure they avoid reactions.

2.Digesting a small amount of the allergen is ok. Actually, the oil of one tiny sesame seed could be enough for a severe life-threatening reaction. Allergies work on a microscopic level, depending on the severity and type of allergy. A few micro-particles of an allergen can be fatal for severely allergic people.

3. A food allergy that has caused only a mild reaction will always cause a mild reaction. The truth is there is no way to know when a mild reaction will be a serious reaction the next time the allergen is eaten. Many allergic reactions worsen with time and exposure.

4. The food itself only needs to be avoided. Unfortunately, cross contact is a real problem for people with food allergies. Avoiding cross contact between a safe food and your food allergen is just as important as avoiding the allergen itself. Cross-contact occurs when an allergen is accidentally transferred from one food to another. This happens when the same hands surface, or utensil is used for food preparation of an allergen and a non-allergen. The food that was safe before is now dangerous for people with that food allergy. This can also happen when a public work surface is not sterilized before preparing allergen-free food.

5. Soap and water is enough to prevent cross contamination. While soap, water, and paper towels are enough to keep your hands clean from allergens, it is not enough for counters, utensils, pots and pans. The safest way to eliminate allergen contaminants and destroy the proteins and oils with allergens is to clean all surfaces with commercial-grade cleansers, then rinse and dry.

What Our Clients Say

Meticulous in their preparations

During our recent visit to Israel, we really struggled to find food for our son who has anaphylactic level allergies to egg and sesame. We approached both restaurants and hotels and were told they were unable or unwilling to take responsibility for preparing his food.

After learning about Dr. Eliana on-line, we contacted her in the hopes that she could provide a ‘normal’ restaurant experience for our family.

Both she and Shani were meticulous in their preparations with the restaurants to ensure that our son had a wonderful and safe experience.

We truly appreciate their efforts to take care of our son, and to provide us with a lovely vacation experience.

Comfortable, calm, and at ease

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the amazing gift you have given us over this Pesach- the gift of having you with us!!!!

We have NEVER felt more comfortable, calm, and at ease than we did these past 10 days. Your warmth, professionalism, kindness, and care shown through in all that you did.

My children are so grateful that they were able to be with you this Pesach. You made sure that they were so well looked after and they felt so at ease and comfortable with you! You were so amazing and approachable to them! And they LOVED all the food you so amazingly prepared (supervised allergy-free food preparation, managed menus) for them!

It’s very difficult for us to trust people when it comes to our kids and allergies. You magically were able to take away ALL of our anxieties, and nervousness (and we don’t give that away so easily!!)

We can never fully thank you enough. We truly feel that you instantly became part of our family and we look forward to G-d willing being able to be with you and plan amazing trips with you many many many more times!!!!
